FabLab
Science and engineering education should be designed and taught in such a manner that every student, regardless of background or learning characteristics, has access and benefits from deep and engaging science and engineering learning opportunities.

A Unique Engineering Experience
The Fab Lab (formerly Engineering and Design Center) is an engineering classroom designed to "WOW."  The idea is for kids to learn NGSS engineering design standards, while being amazed at their own ability to use math, science, and technology to invent something new.

The lab has tons of high end equipment (laser cutters, 3D printers, CNC milling, robotics arenas, vinyl cutter and more than 100 computers from 3D augmented reality zSpace workstations to tiny Arduinos) to give an amazing science and engineering experience to students who come for field trips and teachers who come for training.

The Equipment

3D Printers

The 3D Printer is a type of additive manufacturing.  Students can do CAD in the computer lab or they can use the 3D computers to do 3D sculpting.  We have four printers to speed up student manufacturing.
Laser Cutters

The laser cutter is a very fast form of 2D subtractive manufacturing.  Light cuts through pieces of material leaving behind the desired object.  It is allows for quick manufacturing, high precision, and low waste.  Students can make something 3D by joining together 2D cut pieces.
zSpace 3D Computers

Students can see their world in new ways with 3D computer models created using z-space.  Anatomy lesson are quick and neat.  See a quantum mechanical model of the atom with a clarity otherwise unobtainable.  Test gravity and energy models of other planets.
CNC Milling

Students can design objects to be cut away by these large robots.  It is a type of subtractive manufacturing, in which a piece of wood is chosen and all but the desired structure is removed.
Robots

The Fab Lab is full of robots, from the VEX Robotics arena used for our league, to the robots that students create on field trips.  Lots of small computers like Micro:Bits, Arduinos, and Raspberry Pis allow students to manufacture and program all types of robots.
Vinyl Cutter

Students can design products from stickers to T-Shirts.  You can use the computer to make exact designs and the vinyl cutter will manufacture it.
LOCATION & HOURS
The Fab Lab is located on the SJCOE Campus in the Career and Technical Education Building.

We envision a future when children, community, schools and teachers will embrace the goals of the Next Generation Science Standards. Every child will engage in student-centered, inquiry-based STEM education while addressing local and global challenges. These experience will inspire innovative, ecologically and technologically literate lifelong learners, community members and STEM professionals.
